Illdisposed: The prestige
03/04/08 || Kampfar
I’d like to inform that Illdisposed was the band proving to me, 13 or so years ago, I wasn’t the all knowing (death) metal guru I thought myself to be. You see, “Submit” was some of the best shit I had ever heard (still is), and this from a band I hadn’t heard the slightest mention of before being presented to their once muddy awesomeness, that by a friend. My point is, you would be hard pressed to find a more suitable person to review “The Prestige” than this very Campfire.
We all pretty much agree “Burn me wicked” was a letdown compared to “1-800 vindication”. The former being, in my words, obviously, boring as fuck and put together with the same amount of passion a former gangbang queen – now utterly loose and with a sunken uterus, not to forget her wretched anus – would muster if offered a carrot, small at it.
Safe to say “The Prestige” didn’t face a humongous task being a step or two in the right direction, but at least it is. Too few ahead, though, to walk besides their first effort on Roadkill. That aside, their message is, as always, counting out “Four depressive seasons”,* conveyed with utter power, stomping your living room if played at the appropriate volume. In other words, the environment in which to churn out some ass kicking death could hardly have been better. I’m not going to do a full blown song by song review, never again, but I’d like to point out where I think the Danes in question capitalize the most on their assets anno 2008, the year of hate.
I’ve ended up with a three clover, and here I present it: “Working class zero”, “Like cancer” and “A child is missing”; all three having a pay off, worthwhile build ups delivering what they promise, a wank concluding in an orgasm, the latter tune sporting some fine fucking harmonies, sad and melancholic at it.
A great example of mediocre riffs leading nowhere would be “A song of myself”, not to talk about the only real crapper of the album, namely “Ich bin verloren in Berlin”. The single least inspired song I’ve heard them make so far. Hell, the best thing about it is the sample at the end, taken from a fucked up Danish series named “Riget”.
Be sure to watch it.
Bo Summer, Mr. Subwoofer if you want, sure is the main asset of this band, so also here, but without the backing of Lasse B. Laart’s riffs and grooves I’m afraid the magic of Illdisposed is lost, gone, evaporated. Pretty much, at least. By all means, invest in Illdisposed, but be utterly sure you check their back-catalogue first.
6,5 riot inducing Mohammad drawings out of 10.
*I know “Kokaiinum” is a pretty much a shit album, but remember squat of how it sounded in technical terms.
